JJ Cale - Closer To You (1994)

JJ Cale was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist.

Album number eleven from JJ Cale was a self-produced mix of home productions, where he played all the instruments himself (including synthesizers), and fuller band arrangements, mostly featuring keyboardist Bill Payne (of Little Feat), guitarist Don Preston, bassist Tim Drummond and drummers Jim Karstein and James Cruce. There were also cameos from drummer Jim Keltner, keyboardist Spooner Oldham and The Band’s Garth Hudson (on accordion). The title track was of particular note, a JJ Cale home production experiment which took things a step further by electronically processing his voice, giving it a strange hypnotic effect. On the other end of the scale, the instrumental “Steve’s Song” was a jam featuring a total of thirteen musicians.
It was an interesting album, and contained some of his best material of the decade.
