Joan Baez - In Concert (1962-1963)

Joan Baez is an American folk singer who was an important part of the early 60s folk music revival.

After her first two albums which had established her as a leading figure in the 60s folk revival, Joan Baez's next releases were both live concert recordings - In Concert, Part 1 and In Concert, Part 2 coming out in 1962 and 1963 respectively. They captured her at her very best, in front of an enraptured audience. They were also notable for expanding her repertoire beyond just traditional folk material - they included two important topical songs, the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" and Malvina Reynolds' "What Have They Done To The Rain" (about nuclear fallout). Other non-traditional songs by recent songwriters included Woody Guthrie's "Pretty Boy Floyd", Derroll Adams' "Portland Town" and Anne Bredon's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". On Part 2 she also introduced two songs from the pen of a young folk singer by the name of Bob Dylan, whom she was having a relationship with at the time. Her covers of "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and "When The Ship Comes In" were among the earliest Dylan covers, and Baez was responsible for helping Dylan and his songs reach a much larger audience. Before long his success would eclipse hers as he became next big thing in both the folk and pop worlds.
The albums were very successful, both going Gold.
