New Riders Of The Purple Sage - Gypsy Cowboy (1972)

The New Riders Of The Purple Sage are an American country-rock band, with roots in the San Francisco psychedelic scene of the 60s.

Their second album had seen John Dawson relinquish his role as band-leader somewhat, as guitarist David Nelson and bassist Dave Torbert started singing lead vocals, writing their own songs and bringing in covers. He re-asserted his authority somewhat on their third album, Gypsy Cowboy, and as a result over half the songs were written by him, and he performsedas lead singer on all but four of them. Torbet contributed three songs, and there are great covers of "Long Black Veil" and "She's No Angel". Songs like "Whiskey" and "Sutter's Mill" forged a unique connection between the band's hippie ethos and their vision of a bygone America - no other band epitomizes the idea of 'psychedelic country' better. Dawson's song "Death And Destruction" showcased their psychedelic side the best, with Buddy Cage's distorted steel guitar screaming and howling over Dawson's apocalyptic lyrics. Guest musicians on the album included singer Donna Jean Godchaux (of The Grateful Dead), keyboard player Mark Naftalin (of The Butterfield Blues Band) and fiddler Richard Greene (of Seatrain and Muleskinner).
