Joan Baez - Joan Baez (1960)

Joan Baez is an American folk singer who was an important part of the early 60s folk music revival.

Joan Baez began her singing career busking in her home state of Massachusetts, and soon began to get regular gigs. She appeared as one of three folk-singers on an album called Folk Singers 'Round Harvard Square in 1959, released on Veritas Records. She then befriended folk-singer Bob Gibson, who invited her to play at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. Her performance was critically praised, and got her signed to Vanguard Records. Her debut album was released in 1960. It contained thirteen traditional songs, all sung to her own guitar accompaniment. Her otherworldly voice made her an instant hit with the folk crowd, and she quickly rose to become a prominent part of the American folk revival. The album eventually went Gold, peaking at #15 and spending 140 weeks on the charts.
